Glooming lights II

This drawing is a continuation of the billboard work "Glooming Lights," which I conceived for a billboard in Berlin Mitte and exhibited there in the spring of 2023.

I reference an online article from "Die Zeit" from 2022, which reports on the passage of a law imposing a lifetime smoking ban on young people in New Zealand. I am particularly interested in the question of how far a state may infringe upon the rights of the individual.

I reflect on the significance of digital media and its importance as a form of communication. With their help, and their social and political relevance, I examine the current situation. They serve me as a kaleidoscope of the prevailing mood.

As in all my recent works, different layers of writing and typography flow into one another. The article itself is reproduced verbatim. I write it in ink at a font size of 1 mm in the center of the drawing paper. The sometimes polarizing comments from readers are written slightly larger around the edge. In addition, I add my personal summary of the various opinions as a third layer, written in my own handwriting. This reveals what I find interesting and important. As a final step, I link each comment to its source. This creates a complex network of communication, both in terms of content and visuals, involving sender, recipient, and artist. It interweaves the political, the social, and the personal, allowing them to enter into dialogue with one another.

At the center is the political situation, while the social situation forms the framework.

Digital media facilitate participation in the discussion. The political and social situation become comprehensible at a glance.

Glooming lights II

Diese Zeichnung ist die Fortsetzung der Billboard Arbeit „Glooming lights“, die ich für eine Plakatwand in Berlin Mitte konzipiert und dort im Frühjahr 2023 gezeigt habe.
Ich nehme Bezug auf einen Online Artikel der „ZEIT“ aus dem Jahr 2022, in dem über den Beschluss für ein Gesetz zu einem lebenslan- gen Rauchverbot für Jugendliche in Neuseeland berichtet wird. Mich interessiert hierbei besonders die Frage, inwieweit ein Staat in die Rechte des Einzelnen eingreifen darf.

Ich reflektiere die Bedeutung digitaler Medien und ihren Stellenwert als Kommunikationsform. Mit ihrer Hilfe, und ihrer gesellschaftlichen und politischen Relevanz, untersuche ich die aktuelle Situation. Sie dienen mir als ein Kaleidoskop der momentanen Stimmung.

Wie in all meinen jüngsten Arbeiten fließen verschiedene Schrift- und Typografie-Ebenen ineinander. Der Artikel selbst wird 1:1 reprodu- ziert. Ich schreibe ihn mit Tusche in einer Schrifthöhe von 1mm in die Mitte des Zeichenpapiers. Die zum Teil polarisierenden Kommentare der Leser*innen stehen etwas größer ringsum. Ergänzend in meiner eigenen Handschrift füge ich meine persönliche Zusammenfassung der verschiedenen Meinungen als dritte Ebene hinzu. Hier zeigt sich, was mir interessant und wichtig erscheint. Als letzten Schritt verbin- de ich die einzelnen Kommentare mit ihrer Quelle, auf die sie Bezug nehmen. So entsteht ein inhaltlich wie auch visuell komplexes Kom- munikationsgeflecht aus Absender, Adressat und Künstler. Es verknüpft Politisches, Gesellschaftliches und Persönliches miteinander und lässt es in Dialog zueinander treten.

In der Mitte steht die politische Situation, die gesellschaftliche bildet den Rahmen.

Die digitalen Medien ermöglichen die Teilnahme an der Diskussion. Die politische wie auch gesellschaftliche Situation wird auf einen Blick erfassbar.
